The largest electricity producer and coal supplier in Kazakhstan – “Samruk-Energy” JSC marks its 15th anniversary on May 10.

On this day in 2007, “Samruk-Energy” joint-stock company, established to implement a long-term state policy on upgrading the existing and commissioning new generating facilities, was incorporated by justice authorities and commenced its production activities.

Today “Samruk-Energy” JSC is the largest power holding in Kazakhstan. Its key business lines are the production of electricity and heat; transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity; thermal coal mining. The holding company comprises energy and coal enterprises, including the leaders of the domestic power sector – “Ekibastuz SDPP-1” LLP and “Ekibastuz SDPP-2” JSC, the largest coal mining company “Bogatyr- Komir” LLP, “Almaty Power Plants” JSC (APP), “Alatau Zharyk Company” JSC (AZhC), “AlmatyEnergoSbyt” LLP, “Moynak HPP” JSC, “Shardarinsk HPP” JSC, wind and solar power plants. “Samruk-Kazyna” SWF” JSC holds 100% of “Samruk-Energy” JSC shares.

  • “Samruk-Energy” JSC is the republic’s leading electricity producer. The company's share is 31.4%. As the main electricity producer, “Samruk-Energy” provides reliable and stable power supply to Kazakhstani consumers, including “National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” JSC, “National Atomic Company “Kazatomprom” JSC, the cities of Nur-Sultan, Almaty, Ekibastuz, Kokshetau, as well as Kostanay, Akmola, Karaganda, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda and other regions of the country.
  • Samruk-Energy is the leader in coal mining in Kazakhstan with a share of about 40%. The company is the main supplier of coal for Ekibastuz SDPPs, Almaty Power Plants, “Astana-Energy” JSC, “SevKazEnergo” JSC, “Karaganda Energocenter” LLP, “Pavlodarenergo” JSC, etc.
  • The total installed capacity of “Samruk-Energy” JSC power plants today is 6 215,1 MW This is 25.9% of the total installed capacity of all power plants in Kazakhstan.

  • “Samruk-Energy” JSC has implemented 14 different projects in the power sector since 2007, including:

    - the restoration of power units No. 2 and No. 8 at Ekibastuz SDPP-1, with a capacity of 500 MW each.

    - construction of 300 MW Moynak hydropower plant.

    - construction of a unique solar station with a capacity of 2 MW in the city of Kapshagay, Almaty region.

    - construction of the first industrial-scale 45 MW wind power plant in Kazakhstan in the Akmola region.

    - complete upgrading of Shardarinsk HPP with the replacement of four hydroelectric units and an increase in the station's capacity to 126 MW.

  • Since 2007, 38 substations have been built and commissioned in the Almaty agglomeration under the management of “Samruk-Energy” JSC. The total increase in transformer capacity was more than 3500 MVA.
  • The most important project in the history of the Almaty energy system was the construction of 220 kV electrical grids. This enabled to creation a ring around Almaty city by combining 500kV master substations of “KEGOC” JSC and 220kV hub substations of “AZhC” JSC. The length of 220 kV power lines "Ermensay substation - Besagash substation - Almaty CHP-3" is 81.44 km, including overhead sections - 61.28 km, cable sections - 20.16 km.
  • Today Samruk-Energy runs five renewable energy facilities (solar power plants, wind power plants, and small hydropower plants). Their total installed capacity is 97.1 MW or 4.8% of the installed capacity of renewable energy facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The generation of electricity by stations in 2021 amounted to 325.3 mln. kWh or 7.7% of the volume of electricity generated by renewable energy facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
  • In 2021, electricity generation at “Samruk-Energy” JSC power plants reached a historical maximum - with a plan of 32,146 mln. kWh, it amounted to 35,609 million kWh, performance was 111%. Stations of national importance Ekibastuz SDPP-1 and SDPP-2 have generated the maximum electricity since commissioning.
  • In 2021, the supply of heat that are part of “Samruk-Energy” JSC – “APP” JSC, “ESDPP- 1” LLP, “ESDPP-2” JSC, with planned 5,410.5 thous. Gcal amounted to 5,766.0  thous. Gcal, or 107%.
  • “Bogatyr-Komir” LLP coal output in 2021 amounted to 44.63 mln. tons, which is higher than the planned figure by 42.06 mln. tons (106%). At the same time, the volume of coal sales amounted to 44.74 mln. tons with a planned 42 mln. tons. The sales increase is associated with the growth of demand for coal in the domestic market.
  • In 2021, “Samruk-Energy” JSC made its debut placement of green bonds in the Fund's group in the exchange of Astana International Financial Center - Astana International Exchange in the amount of 18.4 bn. tenge. Proceeds from the placement are used to finance green eligible projects in accordance with the Green Bond Principles (GBP) of the International Capital Markets Association (ICMA).
  • To date, “Samruk-Energy” JSC portfolio comprises 18 projects at the stage and in the perspective of implementation for a total amount of about 2 tril. tenge, including:

    - the first power unit of Ekibastuz SDPP-1 with a nominal capacity of 540 MW (after restoration) in commissioning in 2024.

    - commissioning of the third power unit of the Ekibastuz SDPP-2 with a capacity of 636 MW in 2026, the fourth unit with a nominal capacity of 540 MW in 2030;

    - a project for the transition to a cyclic-and-continuous method for extraction, transportation, blending, and loading of coal at Bogatyr open-pit mine;

    - from 2028 to 2035 sequential reconstruction of units 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Ekibastuz SDPP-1 with an increase in total capacity by 240 MW;

    - reconstruction of the Almaty CHP-3 of APP including an increase in installed capacity up to 450 MW and ensuring a maneuvering mode (commissioning in 2024);

    - reconstruction of Almaty CHP-1 of APP with an increase in capacity up to 250 MW and the possibility of maneuvering in 2024;

    - expansion of Almaty CHP-2 with the construction of a CCGT unit up to 600 MW in 2026;

    - construction of a counter-regulating Kerbulak HPP with a capacity of 40 MW, which will increase the range of power control at the Kapshagay HPP to 300 MW;

    - development in the Shelek corridor of projects for the development of the wind and hydro potential of the region.
