On November 25, “Samruk-Energy” JSC with the assistance of the Green Finance Center, made a debut placement of green bonds in the trading system of “Astana” International Financial Center’s stock exchange - Astana International Exchange with a coupon rate of 11,4% per annum and a circulation period of 6 (six) years and 6 (six) months.

Proceeds from placement will be used to finance green viable projects that comply with International Capital Markets Association (ICMA) Green Bond Principles (GBP).

“Halyk Finance” JSC, a subsidiary of “Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan” JSC, has become a lead manager for issue and placement of the Company's green bonds.

Sungat Yessimkhanov, the Chairman of the Management Board of “Samruk-Energy” JSC, talked about the importance of investing in green energy in order to implement the Energy Transition Plan set out in the new development strategy of the Company.

Kazakhstan, like the whole world, is embarking on the stage of 4th energy transition to the widespread use of renewable energy sources, which over time will largely supersede fossil fuels - gas, oil, coal. In this regard, global trends towards the transition to a "green economy", growing ESG requirements of stakeholders, are challenges for Samruk-Energy. This is why, the Company outlined directions for transition to a "green" economy in its Development Strategy and is confidently moving towards its accomplishment. We would like to thank the Green Finance Center, Halyk Finance and the AIFC Stock Exchange for well-coordinated work" said Sungat Yessimkhanov, the Chairman of the Management Board of “Samruk-Energy” JSC.

The debut issue of green bonds was implemented with the support of the Green Finance Center, which provided the necessary consulting support and an independent opinion in the Second Party Opinion format.

“We are undoubtedly happy and proud that such large and significant companies for the country's economy as “Samruk-Energy” JSC are stepping into the green track, recognizing their importance as an engine of sustainable development - this is, perhaps, the main result of our work as a development institution that implements financial instruments for sustainable development such as green and social bonds”, - said Aidar Kazybaev, Director General of the Center for Green Finance.

The Company bonds became the first securities where the portfolio company “Samruk-Kazyna” SWF” JSC acted as the issuer, and which comply with the green principles of the AIFC Stock Exchange. One of the strategic directions for the AIFC development is providing support to investment projects that deliver environmental and social benefits to society. It is clear that the issuance of green bonds on the AIFC Stock Exchange by the largest power holding company is a landmark event that will kick-start ESG investment expansion in Kazakhstan and motivate companies from brown sectors of the economy.
