Construction of the largest wind power plant in Kazakhstan and Central Asia has been launched in Zhambyl region. A ceremonial time capsule laying took place in the Moyynkum district, near the village of Khantau. The project is being implemented by Samruk-Energy JSC and NC KazMunayGas JSC in partnership with one of the world’s leading energy companies, TotalEnergies, as part of a strategic partnership between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the French Republic.
Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Kazyna JSC, Sylvain Guiaugue, Ambassador of France to Kazakhstan, as well as representatives of NC KazMunayGas JSC, joined the event via videoconference.
The on-site ceremony was attended by Kairat Maxutov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Energy JSC; Yerbol Karashukeyev, Mayor of Zhambyl region; Thierry Plaisant, Managing Director at TotalEnergies Renewables; and Adilzhan Nursipatov, General Director of KMG Green Energy LLP.
“As part of the project, 150 wind turbines with a capacity of approximately 7 MW each will be installed across an area of 20,000 hectares. Annual generation is expected to reach around 4 billion kWh of ‘clean’ energy, making a significant contribution to addressing the power deficit in the southern regions. The project is of strategic importance for Kazakhstan’s energy sector,” said Kairat Maxutov, Head of Samruk-Energy JSC, in his remarks.
The Mirny project includes the construction of a 1 GW wind power plant, a 600 MWh energy storage system, and the development of related grid infrastructure. Total investment is estimated at approximately USD 1.2 billion. Commissioning is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2028.
The project is aimed at improving the reliability of power supply in the southern regions of the country. Its implementation will strengthen the national power system, increase the share of renewable energy sources, create new jobs, and provide an additional boost to the socio-economic development of Zhambyl region.
