"Ekibastuz GRES-1" is condensing thermal power plant that generates and distributes electricity, with an installed capacity of 4,000 MW. The power plant’s main fuel is Ekibastuz coal deposit.
Today, five of the eight units are in constant operation and can develop 2500 MW.
To date, three international standards ISO 9001: 2000, OHSAS 18001: 2007, ISO 14001: 2004 have been introduced and are working successfully in the company. In December 2006, the power plant has received an international certificate of compliance with requirements of Quality Management System - ISO 9001: 2000. In March 2008, the power plant has received certificates according to Standard of Management System in the area of occupational health and safety - OHSAS 18001 and Standard of Management System in the area of environmental protection - ISO 14001: 2004.
Power unit No. 1 at EGRES-1 power plant are scheduled to be restored and upgraded by 2024; this will enable the plant to reach its nameplate capacity of 4000 MW and satisfy growing demand for electricity not only in Kazakhstan but also in neighboring countries. Recovery of non-operating facilities is economically feasible for Ekibastuz GRES-1 and necessary for Kazakhstan since it reduces power shortage risks in the country and contributes to the growth of national economy.
