Samruk-Energy сommences сonstruction of a major wind power plant in Karaganda region

Construction has officially commenced in the Osakarov district of Karaganda region on one of Kazakhstan’s largest wind power plants (WPP), with an installed capacity of 500 MW. The project is being developed by Samruk-Energy JSC in partnership with China Energy International Group under an intergovernmental agreement between Kazakhstan and the People’s Republic of China.

The ceremonial start of construction was held in a telebridge format with the participation of Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Kazyna JSC, Han Chunlin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kazakhstan; and Jia Xubin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Energy International Group.

“The new facility will provide the region with reliable and sustainable energy and will further support the development of Karaganda region. Today’s ceremony reflects confidence in the future and the steady progress of Kazakhstan’s modern energy sector”, - noted Nurlan Zhakupov.

A time capsule marking the foundation of the future facility was placed by Kairat Maxutov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Energy JSC, Edil Zhanbyrshin, Member of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Shao Yuebo, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Karaganda Wind Power LLP, and Ermagambet Bulekpayev, Governor of Karaganda region.

In his remarks, Kairat Maxutov emphasized the project’s importance in attracting investment to the region and increasing the share of clean electricity generation.

“The project will feature next-generation wind turbines. The plant will incorporate artificial intelligence-based systems for operational management. Its implementation will make a significant contribution to expanding clean energy generation in Karaganda region”,-  said Kairat Maxutov.

Governor of Karaganda region Ermagambet Bulekpayev noted that the project will support industrial development in the region.

“This is an important milestone for Karaganda region, which is an industrial, energy-deficient area. The construction of a new power plant will create additional jobs and enable the launch of new production facilities”, -  said the governor.

The total investment in the project amounts to approximately USD 600 mn. Annual electricity generation is expected to reach around 1.8 bn kWh. The wind power plant is scheduled to be commissioned in Q1 2029.
